Tesharah, the Jamaican-born, Canadian-raised vocal powerhouse long known for her gospel roots, is making headlines for an entirely different reason this year — dancehall. At the 2025 Reggae North Music Awards, she has been nominated not once, but twice — a major feat for an artist who only recently ventured into this genre.
The nominations — Top Dancehall Single of the Year and Female Artist of the Year — are both tied to her 2023 single “Nuh Badda Me,” a track that marked a bold new chapter in her music career. “I’m ecstatic! It feels unreal to know that the song I’m being nominated for was a song that took me out of my comfort zone,” she shared.
Before “Nuh Badda Me,” Tesharah was primarily seen as a soulful singer with gospel, R&B, and reggae influences. She wasn’t known for DJ-ing — the rhythmic, lyrical style that dominates dancehall. But a fateful day in the studio with her producer and manager, DaJourney Productions, changed that. A riddim called B66 caught her attention. “A lot of DJs were doing their thing on it, and he asked me to write something,” she recalled. “I hesitated, but after some convincing, I gave it a try.”
The result? A crowd-pleasing anthem that lit up every stage she graced. “Once I recorded ‘Nuh Badda Me,’ it was a hit with the crowd. That’s when I realized — I have something here,” she said.
Tesharah’s journey from a church choir singer at age nine to a genre-blending artist is one of growth, courage, and creative exploration. Her latest body of work, “My Story” (2024), further demonstrates her evolution, featuring standout tracks like “Check a Bwoy” and “Over You.” Her versatility has earned her spots on major stages, including TD Jerk Fest and The hArt Music Series.
Next up, Tesharah is set to release “Loving You Forever” this July — a reggae lovers rock tune produced by Blk Orchid and mastered by Buddah of Buddahvibes Production. She’s also gearing up for a live performance at Montreal’s Taste of the Caribbean Festival in July.
As for what fans can expect. “Great music and live performances that show growth and versatility,” she promises. With her newfound confidence in dancehall and unwavering passion for timeless music, Tesharah’s next chapter looks as dynamic as her voice.
