Reggae Icon Stephen “Cat” Coore of Third World Dies at 69

Stephen “Cat” Coore, co-founder of the legendary reggae band Third World and one of Jamaica’s most revered musicians, has died. He was 69.

The iconic guitarist passed away suddenly on Sunday evening, according to a statement released by his publicist.

Before forming Third World, Coore was among the early members of Inner Circle. He later joined forces with keyboardist Ibo Cooper to establish Third World, a band that would go on to redefine reggae music. Through a groundbreaking blend of reggae, soul, funk, pop, and rock, Third World helped shape the reggae-fusion sound and carried Jamaican music to audiences around the world.

The group earned international acclaim with timeless hits such as Now That We’ve Found Love,” “96 Degrees in the Shade,”  and Try Jah Love,” becoming one of Jamaica’s longest running and most successful bands.

Widely celebrated for his exceptional musicianship, compositional brilliance, and deep musical knowledge, Coore was honored with the Order of Distinction by the Government of Jamaica for his outstanding contribution to Jamaican culture and the creative arts.

He is survived by his wife Lisa; his children Shiah, Kanna, Stephen, and Ashley; his grandchildren; and a wide circle of extended family, bandmates, colleagues, and devoted fans across the globe.
