Lion Face, who made his name as a sound system selector in New York’s competitive dancehall scene, released his latest ‘riddim’ in late June. It is called ‘The Signal’ and contains five songs by artists with whom he has previously worked.
‘Signal’ by JC Lodge is the lead single. It was also released last month. ‘Feel So Alive’ by Sean Paul and Maxi Priest, ‘Pressure’ from Morgan Heritage, ‘I Can Dream About You’ by Luciano and ‘Anger N Wrath’ by Quan Dajai, are the other songs on The Signal.
The Trinidad-born Lion Face had a big hit four years ago with Lodge. ‘Over’, which she recorded on his ‘Divorce Court riddim,’ did well throughout South Florida and New York City.
For ‘The Signal,’ Lion Face said he went back to basics.
“The Signal riddim is a nice One Drop, lovers rock style, sweet reggae music that I have come to appreciate. In my experience, reggae sells more than dancehall, it has more longevity than dancehall,” he explained.
Doing the sound system rounds in the Big Apple during the 1980s and 1990s prepared Lion Face for a career in production. He made his debut in 1999 with the ‘Unleaded riddim,’ which had songs by Sean Paul, Lady Saw, Capleton and Determine.
