Danette the Butterfly Girl!

A recording artist since 2012, Danette Mahabeer-Turner can spot a potential song just by looking at it. Her writer’s instinct kicked in while she was working on a project in January, and within a month, she cut ‘Caterpillar to A Butterfly’.

That song, produced by MBMG The Studio, was released in March. It was sparked by a drawing of a butterfly the Kentucky-based singjay saw while assembling items for a vision board.

In a matter of days, she came up with what became the hook and chorus for ‘Caterpillar to A Butterfly’, a catchy dancehall song which features her seven-year-old daughter Soheila London and American rapper Sir Duke.

“Recording the song with my daughter was a life-changing moment for both of us. I wanted her to be a part of it and it made her so excited. We had fun and to my surprise she nailed it the very first time she hit the recording booth,” Mahabeer-Turner explained.

A community activist in Paducah, Kentucky, Mahabeer-Turner hosts the Voiced Thoughts Talk Show And Podcast, on which she gives advice on diverse issues, including to persons who have suffered domestic abuse.

From Clarendon parish in Jamaica, she previously recorded as Lady Genius and appeared on major events in Jamaica such as the 2015 Jazz and Blues Festival. Her best-known song is a reggae version of Alicia Keys ‘No One’.
