Veteran journalist, community leader and activist Philip Mascoll has died at the age of 77. According to a family source, Mascoll passed away on Monday, September 14.
Mascoll was a respected retired journalist with the Toronto Star and a longtime advocate for Jamaica and its Diaspora. Throughout his career and community service, he was committed to strengthening the voice and representation of Jamaicans in Canada.
His leadership in the Jamaican Diaspora included serving as the inaugural President of the Jamaica Diaspora Canada Foundation (JDCF). He also served as an appointed member of the former Diaspora Advisory Board (DAB), where he contributed to efforts aimed at strengthening engagement between Jamaica and Jamaicans living abroad.
Jamaica remained central to Mascoll’s life and public service. Through journalism, activism, Diaspora leadership and mentorship, he made a lasting contribution to the Jamaican Canadian community and helped strengthen ties between Jamaica and its Diaspora. His death marks the loss of a journalist and community advocate whose work touched both Canada and Jamaica.
Mascoll is survived by his three children, Philip Jr., Keisha and Dominic, as well as his grandchildren.
