Trevor Smith is Dr. Luv

An unapologetic patriot, Dr. Trevor Smith has a deep love for Jamaica, land of his birth. He expresses that devotion on ‘Luv U Jamaica,’ his first song, which was released on June 1.

Known as the Singing Professor, Smith lectures in marketing and consumer behavior at the University of the West Indies (UWI)’ Mona campus in Jamaica. He was determined to show the country’s positives in his debut song.

“I was motivated to write ‘Luv U Jamaica’ as a response to the negative press re crime, corruption and economic conditions that Jamaica continues to receive both locally and overseas, some of which is unfounded,” he said.

Smith was assisted on ‘Luv U Jamaica’ by three music industry veterans. They include singer Lymie Murray on backing vocals, keyboardist Bowie McLaughlin and engineer Delroy “Fatta” Pottinger.

Born in Trelawny parish, western Jamaica, Smith had a passion for music even while beating the books as a high school and university student. He was strongly influenced by Dennis Brown, Michael Jackson, The Spinners and The Chi Lites.

He continues the UWI Mona campus’ impressive tradition of producing artists and musicians. Several of them were from sister territories in the Caribbean, such as singer (Dr.) Phillip Thompson (The Bahamas), and keyboardist/singer (Dr.) Charlie Roberts of Antigua who were members of the Inner Circle Band.
