Jamaican singer Shenseea says her third studio album is “practically done.”
During an appearance on Zip 103 FM in Jamaica on Tuesday, the ‘Blessed’ singer was speaking about the completion of her first-ever North American headline tour Never Gets Late Here, which shares its name with her sophomore album.
“My third album is practically done,” she revealed. “Ask me where I find the time but yes, the album is almost done.”
In May this year, ‘Never Gets Late Here’ was released via Rich Immigrants and Interscope Records and debuted at number four on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Two years prior, her first studio album, ‘Alpha’ , debuted at number two on the same chart in March.
Although the soon-to-be 28-year-old did not divulge much information on the pending project, she spoke about the reception of her latest single, ‘Dating Szn’, which has listeners divided over the song’s lyrical content.
“I’m learning from them, the Shenyengs [her fans], they teach me,” she quipped. “But for real though, I enjoy seeing the videos of how much fun they are having, that’s what I want, I want people to enjoy my music, I want them to feel alive when they listen to Shenseea, I don’t want them to be crying.”
Produced by Supa Dups, Dating Szn explores a woman’s indecisiveness while dating two men at once, a practice some deem out of character for women. The song’s melody is a sample from one of America’s best-selling girl groups, TLC’s 1999 mega-hit ‘No Scrubs’, a track she describes as “legendary”.
“Scrubs is one of my favorite songs ever, and we recorded my song without a beat, then we listened to like sixty different beats, and I was like ‘I will know it when I hear it’, and Supa Dups took a shot at it, so big up Supa Dubs for that, so we did that and I said ‘this is it’, so for me to get full clearance on it in just a matter of weeks, I just know that it was meant to be and this was for me; given that we can put on Dating Szn and it doesn’t sound like Scrub was the biggest accomplishment for me to be able to use such a legendary beat and make it my own.”
