Roger “Moore” Hylton, a Montreal-based reggae music enthusiast, broadcaster, and cultural ambassador, has spent decades sharing his passion for reggae music and preserving the rich traditions of Jamaican sound system culture.
Originally from Portland, Jamaica, Hylton’s love for reggae began at the age of eight. Inspired by his uncle, Beres, whose celebrated sound system, Emperor Tone, entertained audiences across the island, Hylton was introduced early to the vibrant sounds and community spirit that define reggae culture. Under his uncle’s mentorship, he developed a deep appreciation for the genre, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to reggae music.
After immigrating to Canada in 1989, Hylton continued to nurture his passion and quickly became a respected figure within the reggae community. His extensive knowledge of reggae music, history, and culture earned him a spot on CKUT 90.3 FM, where he spent more than a decade bringing reggae programming to listeners and helping to connect audiences with the music’s roots and evolution.
His contributions to reggae broadcasting have recently received national recognition. Hylton has been nominated for Top Radio DJ at the 3rd Annual Reggae North Music Awards, one of the country’s premier celebrations of reggae music and culture. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, Ontario, on Sunday, September 27, bringing together artists, broadcasters, industry professionals, and reggae supporters from across Canada.
Today, Hylton remains dedicated to promoting reggae music and its cultural significance. Through his broadcasting work, he continues to introduce audiences to both classic and contemporary reggae while highlighting the stories and influences that have shaped the genre over the years.
Listeners can tune in to hear Roger “Moore” Hylton every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., as he delivers his signature blend of reggae music and cultural insight to the Montreal community and beyond.
As his nomination demonstrates, Roger “Moore” Hylton’s enduring commitment to reggae music continues to make a lasting impact on Canada’s cultural landscape, bridging generations of listeners through the power of music and community.
