‘Breath of Life’, Queen Ifrica’s first album in nine years, is being released today (August 14). Most of the set’s 13 songs are produced by Junior Brown for Nuh Rush Records and is distributed by Tuff Gong International. This is Queen Ifrica’s fourth album. ‘Climb’, her previous collection of songs, was released in 2017.
Three songs from ‘Breath of Life’ — ‘Lanton (Lantern’), ‘Mom Like Me’ and ‘Bad Girl’ — were released this year. The title song is produced by Stephen Marley.
On her previous albums, Queen Ifrica wrote songs that espoused Rastafari and Afro-conscious themes. She also looked at female empowerment on ‘Lioness on The Rise’, one of the hit songs from ‘Montego Bay’, her third album.
The roots artist said she went about things a bit differently this time.
‘I didn’t necessarily cover issues. However, I chose topics as food for thought while being a little playful as well. There’s also a strong emphasis on celebrating the good men in your lives, ladies,” Queen Ifrica joked.
The daughter of ska icon Derrick Morgan, she began recording music over 20 years ago. One of the songs that announced her as an artist of quality was ‘Below the Waist’ in 2004.
‘Fyah Muma’, Queen Ifrica’s debut album, was released in 2007. Two years later came ‘Montego Bay’, which was hailed by pundits as one of the strongest albums in contemporary reggae.
