Canadian singer/actress Megan Soo will be in Jamaica this month to promote ‘Michigesso’, her song with deejay/actor E-Dee. It will be her first time in the country, but she is no stranger to its culture.
“I grew up in Toronto with so much Jamaican culture — in our slang, music and food, so I’m very excited to be in the place where it all comes from!” she exclaimed. Soo will shoot the video for ‘Don’t Lie’, another of her new songs. Her album, ‘K-Hall’, is scheduled for release late this year.
Born in Toronto, Soo’s biracial heritage is a reflection of her hometown’s diversity. Her parents are Korean/Trinidadian; she has spent extended periods in Trinidad and Tobago which has helped Soo appreciate Caribbean culture.
“Growing up in Trinidad for almost 10 years and then in Scarborough, there’s a huge Caribbean community so I always felt at home and connected but moving to LA /West Coast made me realize we need to bring more Caribbean culture out here,” she said.
Los Angeles is where E-Dee, a Jamaican, is based. He has made a name there appearing in movies like ‘Out the Gate’ and ‘Mother in Law’, as well as releasing three albums.
‘K-Hall’ is a hybrid sound that defines Megan Soo’s sound which calls on some of her biggest influences which include Machel Montano, Koffee and Major Lazer. “It’s been a long process in the making but I’ve finally found the sound I’m going for and I’m ready to release it to the world,” she said.
