Fyahnese and Steve Knight Spark Buzz with New Single “Gal Bad Mind”

Veteran recording artistes Fyahnese aka Japanese and singer Steve Knight have officially entered the spotlight once again with their uplifting and comedic new single, “Gal Bad Mind,” featured on the “Hill & Gully Ride” rhythm produced by acclaimed producer Stephen McGregor.

The release has already been gaining strong traction on radio stations in Jamaica and Canada, with fans embracing the track’s infectious energy and catchy lyrics. Adding a nostalgic twist, the chorus melody pays homage to the 1975 Bim & Clover classic “Sweetheart,” giving listeners a familiar and feel-good vibe.

“Gal Bad Mind” marks the second collaboration between the longtime friends and musical colleagues. Produced by Fyahnese Records, the single will officially be available for streaming and download on all major digital platforms on June 15.

Fyahnese and Steve Knight share a friendship and musical journey spanning more than 40 years. Both artistes built respected careers in the reggae and dancehall industry, earning chart success with several notable releases over the years. During the 1980s, they were prominent singers and DJs on some of Jamaica’s top sound systems, although they never officially collaborated musically until after migrating to Canada.

Their first collaboration, “Mama Love” featuring Steve Knight, was released on August 22, 2023, and laid the foundation for what fans now see as a powerful musical partnership.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Steve Knight discovered his love for music while singing in local church choirs at an early age. Raised by his grandmother, who preferred gospel music, Steve instead chose to pursue reggae music, inspired by legendary icons Dennis Brown and Bob Marley.

Over the years, Steve Knight has recorded several popular songs including “Dollars Haffi Strong,” “God Mi Worship,” and chart-topping tracks such as “Hurt,” “Bad Day,” “Woman A Problem,” and “Rodeo Child.” His growing success propelled him onto major stages including Reggae Sumfest and other prominent shows across Jamaica. He later expanded internationally, performing on his first major tour at Japan Reggae Sunsplash in 1991, followed by sold-out performances in California and other cities across the United States.

Fyahnese, also known as Japanese, began sharpening his DJ skills on the Burning Spear sound system located on Payne Avenue, where he lived at the time. He later joined Romantic Hi Power, the sound system owned by dancehall star Little John, where he performed alongside some of the biggest names in dancehall including Lt. Stitchie, Papa San, Admiral Tibet, Echo Minott, and Wayne Wonder.

He also worked with legendary sound systems such as Black Zodiac and Torpedo, but it was his move to Metro Media sound system — performing as many as five to six nights per week — that significantly boosted his popularity.

During that period, Fyahnese recorded what remains his most recognized song to date, “Roughest Hat Man,” on the iconic Cover Me Riddim for producer Lloyd Dennis under the Pickout label.

With “Gal Bad Mind,” both artistes continue to prove that decades of experience, friendship, and passion for music can still create fresh and exciting moments for reggae and dancehall fans worldwide.
