Dr. Leo Gilling’s New Memoir Chronicles a Jamaican Boyhood of Resilience and Triumph

Renowned advocate, academic, and community leader Dr. Leo Gilling is set to launch his deeply personal memoir, From Shadows to Sunshine: My Jamaican Boyhood. This compelling book takes readers on an intimate journey through his childhood in Oracabessa, St. Mary, Jamaica—capturing moments of joy, struggle, and ultimate triumph.

From his earliest memories as a curious three-year-old to the aspirations of an eighteen-year-old on the cusp of adulthood, Dr. Gilling paints a vivid picture of life in a tenement yard. His story is one of resilience in the face of hardship, navigating systemic barriers while finding strength in family, friends, and community support. Through honest storytelling, he highlights the power of perseverance and the transformative role of education and hope in shaping his destiny.

“This book is not just my story; it’s a celebration of resilience, community, and hope,” says Dr. Gilling. “Growing up in Oracabessa, I encountered challenges that could have dimmed my dreams, yet the unwavering support of family, friends, and community illuminated my path to triumph. This work is a testament to the incredible power of perseverance and the transformative impact of self-belief, regardless of the odds. May it inspire readers to embrace their journeys and discover sunshine, even amidst the shadows.”
