Heralded singer and performer Jah’Mila have released her highly anticipated new album, “Woman of the Sun”—a vibrant celebration of new beginnings and growth. Hailed by CBC Music as one of the top 20 new releases to hear this summer, the album is a unique blend of influences anchored in reggae, enriched with diverse sonic textures.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Jah’Mila has established herself as a prominent force in the reggae genre. With “Woman of the Sun”, she broadens her musical palette, showcasing her versatility as both a singer and songwriter. The album, produced by Ben Barton Creelman, follows her JUNO-nominated debut, “Roots Girl”, and presents a meticulously crafted soundscape. It melds reggae’s storied traditions with soul melodies, polished pop elements, and Jah’Mila’s signature honeyed vocals. The record is a testament to her authenticity, curiosity, and reflective nature, celebrating culture, community, and collaboration.
“Woman of the Sun” bridges the gap between Jamaica and Atlantic Canada, two regions that deeply influence Jah’Mila. The album’s lead-off title track features the legendary dancehall toaster U-Roy, setting the stage for a rich musical journey. Renowned Kingston musicians Sly Dunbar and Robbie Lyn contribute drums and keyboards on several tracks, including “Reggae Nuh Dead”, a homage to Kingston’s musical heritage, the sultry “Déjà Vu”, and the uplifting “Never Fail”.
Jah’Mila’s father, Earl “Chinna” Smith, wrote “We Got Love” and plays guitar on several tracks. The song offers a timeless reflection on familial struggles worldwide. These significant contributions were recorded at Jamaica’s Tuff Gong Studios, a historic hub for Caribbean and international musicians.
“East Coast Anthem” features Mi’kmaq rapper Wolf Castle, Nova Scotia R&B star Aquakultre, and a captivating fiddle outro by Wendy MacIsaac. The track pays homage to the reggae classic “Bam Bam”,” famously interpreted by Sister Nancy. Another standout, “Bad Habit”, is a poppy, radio-ready tune featuring Caribbean-Canadian rapper Kayo, string players from Symphony Nova Scotia, a West Coast funk bassist, and backup vocals by the acclaimed Smith Sisters—Reeny, Hailey, and Micah.
The reflective “Walk Alone” includes contributions from its co-writer, David Myles, on trumpet and guitar. Throughout the album, Jah’Mila’s deep connection to reggae remains at the forefront, even as she explores new musical territories.
“Woman of the Sun” symbolizes both the culmination of years of dedication and the beginning of a new chapter for Jah’Mila. With clarity of vision and an open spirit, she stands poised on a bright horizon. Her rising status is further underscored by her recent nominations in two categories at the inaugural Reggae North Music Awards, scheduled for September 29 in Brampton, Ontario.
Available for streaming on all leading platforms, “Woman of the Sun” is a testament to Jah’Mila’s artistic growth and her ability to bridge diverse musical worlds while staying true to her roots. This album is a must-listen, offering a rich tapestry of sounds that honor reggae’s legacy while embracing new and exciting influences.
