As summer approaches, many artists search for catchy beats and infectious lyrics to get that big hit song that will resonate on radio and in the clubs. Singer Av&nte believes ‘Hot fi di Summer’ has the goods to do just that.
Produced by Ricardo “Wai Fuzion” Campbell, the single was released in June. While he would welcome a chart-climber, Av&nte says that was not in his thoughts when he wrote the uptempo track.
“To be honest, I wrote the song with the intent to use humor to tackle the social issue of crime in our Jamaican communities. Too often, we hear artists singing songs that glory violence to get a hit, but they wouldn’t do an intro for a song to ask producers of violence to cool down. That was what i had in mind when recording this song,” he explained.
‘Hot fi di Summer’ is the follow-up to ‘Jamaica ah mi Yard’, a song he recorded for the annual Festival Song Competition which took place in late July. Although he did not win, Av&nte said competing in the 57-year-old contest was worth it.
“The experience in the Festival Song Competition was exceptional. I gained a lot of exposure, I did countless radio interviews, a few TV interviews, I did shows all over the island and my YouTube subscribers have increased,” he said. “It was so good that I wrote another song to enter next year, entitled ‘Heart fi Jamaica’, but whether or not this song makes the final 10 for 2024 is all up to the adjudicators, but next year I’m going for the win for sure.”
Av&nte is from King Weston, a rural area in hilly St. Andrew parish, Jamaica. That is also the hometown of George Nooks, best known for songs like ‘Tribal War’ and ‘God is Standing By’.
