Before gun-touting lyrics dominated dancehall music in the 1980s, Jamaican music had its share of satirists who reveled in the double entendre and poked fun at politicians. Ricky Di Lova longs for a return to those days.
On his new song, ‘Stand Pipe’, the Florida-based Jamaican dabbles in sexual connotations, reminiscent of songs he listened to in his youth back home.
‘Stand Pipe’ offers a play on words. This style of writing has been done in Caribbean music on a whole going back decades with songs like Shaving Cream’ in the ‘70s. It’s time to bring back suggestive lyrics in music,” said Ricky Di Lova, who produced the song for his Turbulence Intl Productions.
While ‘Stand Pipe’ is his first song for 2025, he retains a busy recording and writing regimen. ‘Stand Pipe’ is a result of those hectic sessions.
“This song is perfect for the summer and all-year long. The riddim brings a get up and dance vibe and the lyrics are fun. I’m trying to bring some humor into dancehall so people can ‘full joy’ themselves,” Ricky Di Lova explained.
Ricky Di Lova has been in the music business as an artist and producer for over 30 years. His introduction to music came through listening to sound systems in two communities — Majesty Gardens in Kingston, and Central Village, a community in nearby St. Catherine parish.
Since migrating to the United States, he has released several songs and produced ‘riddims’ such as ‘Should Have Known Better’.
