American reggae band SunDub visited Jamaica in June and recorded songs at Tuff Gong studio in Kingston. Some of those recordings will be released on their third album, earmarked for release in 2025.
The songs are produced by Sidney Mills, the veteran keyboardist who is also a member of the seven-piece band which is from Brooklyn, New York.
Lead singer Joanna Teters said SunDub’s visit to the home of reggae was overdue.
“We’ve been loving the culture and loving the music for such a long time we thought it was time to make that trod and what better place to record than Tuff Gong,” she stated.
Mills, a former member of Grammy-winning band Steel Pulse, has helped develop the SunDub sound which is heavily inspired by Jamaican roots-reggae from the 1970s. They have built a fan base by mainly touring the US East Coast and Canada.
Legendary guitarist Earl “Chinna” Smith, who has played on seminal albums and songs by Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear and Lauryn Hill, was part of the Tuff Gong sessions.
Teters’ brother and drummer Ben Teters, guitarists Finn Singer and Jose Lopez (Joanna’s husband), Jamaican bassist Derrick Bourne and keyboardist Eric Toussaint are the other members of SunDub.
‘Burden of Love’ and ‘Spirits Eat Music’ are their previous albums. Last year, they released a reggae version of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’, a collaboration with American reggae singer Cas Haley.
