In 2024, after nearly 30 years of being joined at the musical hip, Shango Trex and StarFyah decided to officially become an act and record songs. They have accomplished that this year as Stashang.
‘Cocoa’, a sweet song with saucy undertones, is scheduled to be their third release on September 26. It follows ‘Give my Heart’ and ‘Where I Lay’, which came out in March and May, respectively.
Shango Trex’s vocals dominate ‘Cocoa’ which has a different flavor than their previous songs. Being fresh is important to them.
“Because all our records are a team-based production from creating to mastering, ideas on sound are constantly evolving and flowing. Each song intentionally gets its own identity,” he said.
Shango Trex and StarFyah (born in the United Kingdom) were both raised in Kingston, Jamaica where their interest in music developed. The singjay and singer cut their teeth on the country’s rural north coast tourist scene, before moving to Tokyo, Japan where they were part of a vibrant reggae colony.
While they approach each song with a different vibe, members of Stashang agree that blending diverse sounds is a good thing. They believe that was achieved with ‘Cocoa’.
“For us, it’s definitely a modern energy representing dancehall-reggae with some Afro-pop vibes,” said Shango Trex.
