Roots, Reggae, and Resilience: Artists Rallies for Coptic

The reggae community is coming together for an extraordinary night of music, love, and support. On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, at 8 PM, Lee’s Palace will host Coptic’s Journey to Recovery—a heartfelt benefit concert dedicated to Dennis “Coptic” Reeves, a pioneering force in Toronto’s reggae scene who is facing a life-threatening illness.

For over four decades, Coptic has been a pillar of Toronto’s reggae movement. As the co-founder of four influential bands and the visionary behind Coptic Sound Studio, his contributions to the genre have shaped Toronto’s roots reggae landscape. A guitarist, producer, arranger, and mentor, Coptic’s impact extends far beyond the stage—his work has uplifted countless artists and enriched the city’s cultural identity. Now, it’s time for the community to give back to the man who has given so much.

Organized by AMCHASEE, Kanrock TV, and High Energy (Coptic’s band), this benefit concert is more than just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of music, resilience, and unity. The event promises an unforgettable evening of top-tier reggae performances, special guest appearances, and a meaningful discussion on health and wellness.

Despite undergoing weekly chemotherapy and battling constant pain, Coptic remains deeply connected to his music. Though he can no longer rehearse with his band due to low energy, his spirit remains unbreakable. “It’s a blessing to have a supportive family and true friends,” Coptic shares. “This has been a rough time, but music and good people around me strengthen me each day.” He remains determined to keep creating, with plans to release several singles from Coptic Sound Studio this summer.

The lineup for the evening is nothing short of spectacular, featuring veteran reggae musicians such as The Mighty Mystics, Junior Miller, Mikey Melody, Zakious aka Mr. Cooper, and Roger Moore, alongside emerging talent. The overwhelming response from the music community reflects the deep respect and admiration for Coptic, with many eager to lend their voices and instruments to the cause.

More than just a genre, roots reggae is a movement—one that thrives on unity, respect, and support. As Coptic has dedicated his life to keeping the culture alive, it’s our turn to stand by him. Whether through attending the concert, donating, or spreading the word, every effort counts in making a difference in his journey to recovery.
