Reggae artist Lazah Current is no stranger to deep, thought-provoking music, and his latest single, ‘AI’, is no exception. Fully aware of how artificial intelligence is becoming an integral part of daily life, the seasoned musician took to the studio to explore its implications through song. The track, co-produced by Lazah Records and LR Productions, was officially released mid February and has been making waves on airwaves across Jamaica, Canada, and beyond.
“I am very pleased because the response has been quite positive so far, particularly from conscious-minded people who have gravitated towards the content of the song. They do understand the importance of the message,” Lazah said.
During a recent visit to Jamaica, Lazah Current performed ‘AI’ at multiple venues across the island, receiving overwhelming approval from reggae fans. Known as the birthplace and proving ground of reggae and dancehall, Jamaica’s audiences have a reputation for their discerning tastes.
“Jamaica is a testing ground for a variety of life’s reality, and when Jamaicans approve of your music by ‘bussing blanks,’ you know you’ve passed the test, which essentially will enumerate in similar passing results around the world,” he said. “The fans I performed the song for gave their verdict—they love it. I heard them singing the catchy chorus as I performed.”
Lazah Current’s inspiration for the track came from observing recent advancements in artificial intelligence and technology. Watching Elon Musk’s SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets launch into orbit was a defining moment for him, making him realize the accelerated pace of technological evolution. Additionally, seeing robots performing construction work with precision and speed made him reflect on the growing role of automation in the modern world.
“The AI tool is able to achieve unreachable goals much more quickly, which is a good thing. But still, we know how selfish mankind can be. In achieving selfish means, there are those that will do negatives,” he warned.
Despite the risks, Lazah believes AI can have positive applications, but it’s crucial to ensure that humanity remains in control of its use.
In the music industry, AI is already reshaping how songs are created, produced, and performed. While Lazah acknowledges its potential, he’s concerned about its impact on human creativity and emotion.
“The fact that the AI tool can now make an entire song is a testament to the possible changes for music in the future. And if we as humans don’t advocate for maintaining our humanness, then I believe music will become a non-emotional entity… robotic and bionic,” he said.
However, he does see areas where AI can be beneficial, particularly in enhancing production and presentation. As long as it doesn’t strip music of its soul and human connection, he remains open to incorporating it into his craft.
With ‘AI’ gaining traction, Lazah Current is focused on promoting the single while preparing for his next project. He has already completed material for an upcoming album, with a release date to be announced soon. In the meantime, fans can enjoy ‘AI’, available now on all leading digital platforms.
