Barbados-born, Toronto-based reggae artist Progress has released his latest single, “Freedom,” a reggae-Afrobeats fusion that delivers a powerful message of liberation, dignity and self-determination.
Blending contemporary Afrobeats production with his signature reggae-rooted vocal style, “Freedom” presents a modern Caribbean sound while exploring the idea that freedom extends beyond politics to encompass personal growth, spiritual fulfillment and the fundamental dignity of every individual.
The official music video, filmed in Barbados, showcases the island’s natural beauty and lesser-known landscapes, reinforcing the song’s connection to the culture and environment that helped shape Progress’s artistic journey.
Born and raised in Barbados, Progress developed an early appreciation for reggae’s uplifting messages and distinctive bass-driven rhythms. After relocating to Canada in his late teens, he quickly established himself on the reggae scene, earning a finalist spot in the Canadian Reggae Star competition.
His debut album, “Making Progress,” featured the hit single “Sunshine,” which received heavy rotation on Much Music, Tempo and MTV Africa. The project also produced four tracks that reached the CHRY 105.5 Rebel Vibez Top 10 chart, helping cement his reputation as one of Canada’s emerging reggae voices.
Over the years, Progress has maintained a steady release of music while expanding his profile through film, television and international touring. His work has been featured in the documentaries Soldiers of The Street and Over Stand Kings, while his music also appeared in the television series Kink In My Hair. He has performed throughout Canada, the United States, Costa Rica, the Caribbean and Ghana, sharing stages with acclaimed artists including Erykah Badu, Beres Hammond and Maxi Priest.
Beyond his recording career, Progress has remained committed to supporting the reggae community. He founded the Roast Breadfruit Sessions, a biweekly gathering held at a secret location for conscious reggae musicians in Toronto. The collaborative sessions helped build a strong network of artists and eventually evolved into the monthly Freedom Fridays showcase.
With “Freedom,” Progress continues to expand his musical identity by seamlessly merging reggae traditions with contemporary global sounds while remaining rooted in messages of hope, unity and empowerment.
