While he was raised on a diet of dancehall music in Jamaica, Wingy Danejah also had an appreciation for hip hop. On ‘Get to Know You’, he combines both genres with Latin singer Angie Rose and American rapper Kieran the Light.
Produced by Ayekplaydat, the song has a 1980s dancehall/hip hop feel, but the message is straight gospel, a sound the Florida-based artist has embraced since the early 1990s. “My music is different. I do a lot of singjaying, I don’t want it to be too hardcore. I use real-life situations when I am writing to impact lives,” Wingy Danejah explained.
‘Get to Know You’ was released in late 2022. It capped a successful year for Wingy Danejah who scored hit singles with ‘Birthday’ (Remix) with American singer V Rose and ‘Hallelujah’, a collaboration with George Nooks.
While he has achieved much in the US, Wingy Danejah admits similar recognition is not forthcoming in his homeland. “My own people don’t even support me, especially in Jamaica. When you talk about reggae-gospel on a Jamaican level, I feel I should be in the Top Five. But yet you don’t hear my music in Jamaica, you don’t see me on any shows in Jamaica, but why is that?” he asked. “There is a lot I want to say but God is using me as that cornerstone that the builders refuse and making me one of the head cornerstones for the Kingdom.”
