One of the big to-dos on Mission da Gr81’s wish list for 2025, is performing on the biggest shows in Jamaica. Achieving that would be a big step in breaking his music there.
Mission da Gr81, who is originally from St. Mary parish in eastern Jamaica, has his eyes focused on Reggae Sumfest, held during July in Montego Bay.
“The plan is to get more familiar with the people on the ground and try to change up the negativity that is plaguing the place. I am putting out some conscious music, more reggae with some bits of dancehall, just to make the connection with the right people,” he said.
Based in South Florida, Mission da Gr81 is coming off a busy 2024 when he released four songs including ‘Hostage’, ‘My Life Is a Movie’ and ‘Sekkle’. The latter and ‘Hostage’ are produced by Jon FX, another South Florida-based Jamaican whose credits boast hit songs by Gyptian and rapper XXXtentacion.
In addition to Sumfest, Mission da Gr81 hopes to secure a spot on Sting, held annually on December 26 in Portmore, on the outskirts of Kingston, Jamaica’s capital. “Those are the top shows in Jamaica that the world looks forward to seeing yearly,” he said.
