For the past 20 years, Brotha George has etched a name for himself as a gospel artist prepared to stretch the boundaries of that genre. But for ‘Secret Admirer’, his latest album, he returns to his secular roots. The 10-song collection was released in August. Its title track is actually Brotha George’s first released single, which came out in the early 1980s when he recorded as George Wright.
‘Secret Admirer’ was produced by Ossie Hibbert, a keyboardist and session musician at the famed Channel One studio in Kingston. Working with veteran musician Sydney Mills and emerging Andre “Dretegs” Hawthorne, Brotha George revisited that song and others that celebrate the ladies.
“I don’t see anything wrong with gospel artists doing lovers rock. Remember, God is love as long as it’s clean. A lot of people in the church at times have a banquet, and one of their main lovers rock songs is ‘She’s Royal’,” said Brotha George.
Bass guitarist, Lebert “Gibby” Morrison, whose credits include working with Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff, also played on ‘Secret Admirer’. ‘Strong Love’, ‘Virtuous Woman’ and ‘Whiter Shade of Pale’ are some of the other songs on the album which was recorded in Jamaica and New York.
Brotha George is from the Cockburn Gardens/Majesty Gardens communities of Kingston. He started his career on sound systems before launching a recording career with various producers.
He became a Christian over 25 years ago.
