Kastick Returns with a Giant Cover

Paul Kastick is back with another reggae spin on a classic rock song. This time around, he covers Giant’s ‘I’ll See You in my Dreams’ as ‘I’ll See U in my Dreams’, which he co-produced with longtime collaborator Rudy Valentino.

Last year, they produced ‘Night by Night’, Kastick’s reggae-rock version of the Steely Dan standard. That track marked Kastick’s debut on lead vocals.

In an interview with this column, the veteran drummer said he always wanted to do a version of ‘I’ll See You in my Dreams’ which features guitarist Dan Huff on vocals. The original peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1989.

“This is a song I fell in love with from 1990 when I came to Kingston to join 809 Band an’ heard it for di first time. There’s something ‘bout it dat jus’ touch mi, an’ 34 years later di original still sound like it could come out next year,” Kastick explained.

He and Valentino, an American guitarist, have been production partners for many years. They co-produced ‘Hideaway’, a big hit for Tessanne Chin in 2010.

‘I’ll See U in my Dreams’ is expected to be on an album of reggae-rock covers of classic rock songs produced by Kastick and Valentino. That project is scheduled for release this summer.

Since leaving the 809 Band, Kastick has toured with several high-profile acts including Maxi Priest and Big Mountain.
