Tilling the soil is still fashionable in Caribbean islands like Barbados where singer Indra was born and raised. She expresses the joy of farming in ‘Plant Up the Land’, her new song.
According to Indra, the single, “Is an anthem for gardeners, farmers and anybody who aspires to start being an active part in how they eat, save on grocery bills and connect with the Earth.” Farming has been her passion since moving to the Barbados countryside. She volunteered to work on a farm that teaches people how to grow their own food, which whetted her appetite for self-reliance even more.
‘Plant Up the Land’ is one of the songs from a prolific period of composing by Indra in the past two years. Songs from those sessions can be heard on ‘Kingdom Call’, her album which was released last February.
She believes with Covid-19 lockdowns (from 2020 to 2022) affecting supermarkets and stores, a song like ‘Plant Up the Land’ is timely. “When shops and supermarkets were shut down and things were tight money-wise for a lot of people, if you had a garden or home farm with food that would have changed your life for the better in some way,” reasoned Indra.
Born to a Barbadian father and Trinidadian Parang singer/musician, Indra listened to diverse sounds in her youth. She has recorded songs with Eddy Grant and co-wrote ‘Sweet Jamaica’ with dancehall star Mr. Vegas.
