How Petrona McBean Turned a Community Need into a Thriving Caribbean Market

When Petrona McBean relocated to Durham Region, she quickly noticed something many Caribbean families already knew—finding authentic Caribbean groceries and specialty products wasn’t always easy. Rather than accepting the gap in the market, McBean saw an opportunity to create something meaningful: a place where Caribbean culture could be celebrated, shared, and experienced by everyone.

That vision became Tropix Tingz West Indian Market Inc., a Caribbean grocery and cultural retail business based in Oshawa, Ontario. Founded in 2025 and officially opening its doors in March 2026, the market proudly operates under the slogan, “Bringing the Islands to Your Table.”

More than just a grocery store, Tropix Tingz is a cultural hub where customers can discover authentic Caribbean foods, specialty products, and traditions that evoke the warmth and vibrancy of the islands. Whether serving members of the Caribbean diaspora longing for the familiar tastes of home or introducing newcomers to Caribbean cuisine and culture, the business is rooted in community, connection, and cultural appreciation.

McBean’s entrepreneurial journey is one shaped by resilience and determination. Born and raised in Jamaica, she developed a strong work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, and passion for service from an early age. Before immigrating to Canada, she explored several business ventures while building a successful career in Jamaica’s water industry, where she spent approximately thirteen years progressing through a variety of leadership roles.

Her educational achievements also reflect her commitment to excellence. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) in General Management with a minor in Human Resource Management from the University of Technology, Jamaica, equipping her with the knowledge and leadership skills that would later support her entrepreneurial ambitions.

Like many newcomers to Canada, McBean encountered the challenges of rebuilding a professional career in a new country. Navigating credential recognition and establishing herself in the Canadian workforce required patience, adaptability, and perseverance. Refusing to let those obstacles define her, she embraced every opportunity for growth and successfully established herself in management, serving in positions including Client Services Manager and Operations Manager.

Over the course of more than eight years in operations management, customer service, workforce leadership, and business development, McBean gained extensive experience overseeing daily operations, leading diverse teams, improving service delivery, developing organizational policies, and driving operational performance. Those experiences became the foundation for launching her own business.

Today, Tropix Tingz West Indian Market reflects not only McBean’s professional expertise but also her personal mission. Every product on the shelves tells a story of heritage, tradition, and identity, while every customer who walks through the doors is welcomed into an authentic Caribbean shopping experience.

As a single mother, immigrant, and entrepreneur, McBean’s story is one of courage and unwavering determination. She believes that success is built through hard work, continuous learning, faith, and a genuine commitment to serving others. Her journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly newcomers who dream of building successful businesses while creating lasting impact within their communities.

For McBean, Tropix Tingz represents more than a business—it is a bridge between cultures, a celebration of Caribbean heritage, and a testament to what is possible when vision meets perseverance. With every customer served and every authentic Caribbean product shared, she continues to fulfill her mission of bringing the islands to the heart of Durham Region, one table at a time.
