Reggae and dancehall artist and producer Grizzly Cat is stepping boldly into the spotlight once again with the release of “Zodiac Riddim Chapter 1,” a nine-track compilation that brings together some of the genre’s most respected voices. Produced under his imprint, 9Life Records, the project is now available across all major digital platforms, marking another milestone in a career defined by resilience and reinvention.

Born Rohan Nicholson, Grizzly Cat’s journey through the music industry mirrors the meaning behind his name—a relentless survivor navigating the highs and lows of a demanding business. After migrating from Jamaica to Canada as a shy young man, he found his voice through music, blending reggae rhythms with hip-hop flows at a time when the crossover was far from mainstream. His unique style quickly energized local audiences and set him apart within the Canadian music scene.
Over the years, Grizzly Cat has shared stages with some of the biggest names in reggae and beyond, including Capleton, Buju Banton, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Busta Rhymes, and Bounty Killa. A defining early moment came in the 1990s when he and his cousin formed the group Shoreline Gang, eventually landing a deal with Blackstone Records and touring the United States. During that time, Grizzly Cat even crossed paths with the late Tupac Shakur, an experience he describes as transformative.
Despite industry setbacks and personal adversity—including surviving a near-fatal shooting in Toronto—Grizzly Cat 9 continued to push forward. The incident inspired his powerful single “Momma,” which earned a Juno Award nomination in 1999 and remains one of his most impactful works.
Determined to maintain creative control, he established 9Life Records, producing and distributing music independently while expanding into fashion and digital platforms. In recent years, he has experienced a resurgence, releasing his debut album “Last Day of Summer” and continuing to collaborate with artists across Canada, Jamaica, and the United States.
With “Zodiac Riddim Chapter 1,” Grizzly Cat once again demonstrates his commitment to elevating reggae and dancehall on a global scale. More than just a compilation, the project reflects his enduring belief that music is both a calling and a lifeline—one he continues to pursue with unwavering determination.
