Exco Levi Wins Record-Breaking Sixth JUNO Award

Reggae powerhouse Exco Levi has once again solidified his place in Canadian music history, capturing his sixth JUNO Award for Best Reggae Recording with his inspiring album “Born to Be Free”. The win came at the prestigious JUNO Awards Gala, held on Saturday, March 29, in Vancouver, Canada.

Levi’s remarkable track record in the category is unparalleled. With 13 nominations and six wins, his dominance in Canadian reggae is undeniable. His previous JUNO-winning hits— “Bleaching Shop” (2012), “Storms of Life” (2013), “Strive” (2014), “Welcome to the King” (2015), and “Siren” (2017)—have all cemented his reputation as a top-tier reggae artist.

Originally from Jamaica and now based in Brampton, Ontario, Wayne Ford Levy, known professionally as Exco Levi, began his musical journey singing gospel hymns in school choirs. Now a devoted Rastafarian, his music is a blend of spiritual, philosophical, and socially conscious themes, as showcased in his latest album “Born to Be Free”, released in March 2024 through Penthouse Records. The 15-track album, primarily produced by reggae stalwart Donovan Germain, is a testament to Levi’s commitment to thought-provoking lyrics and impeccable musicianship.

Exco Levi emerged victorious in a competitive field that included nominees King Cruff (Fallback), Bob Riddim (Destiny), Skystar (Sky’s the Limit), and Tonya P (Rise).

Though he maintains a studio in Brampton, Levi frequently collaborates with Jamaican producers and artists, ensuring his music remains deeply connected to its roots. His contributions to the arts were previously recognized when he was inducted into the Brampton Arts Walk of Fame in 2016.

With “Born to Be Free” earning him yet another JUNO, Exco Levi continues to carve out an inspiring legacy, reinforcing his status as one of the most influential reggae artists in Canada.
