Canadian reggae artist Empress Divine continues to elevate her profile with her latest single, “Medi,” which is steadily gaining attention across the reggae community. Released on February 10, 2025, and produced by Ras Tavaris of Seami Records, the track is available on all major digital streaming and download platforms and is now earning both audience traction and industry recognition.
Adding to its growing success, “Medi” has recently been nominated in the Female Category for Top Reggae Single at the upcoming Reggae North Music Awards, scheduled for Sunday, September 27, at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, Ontario. In addition to this recognition, Empress Divine has also secured a nomination in the Top Female Vocalist category, further solidifying her status as one of Canada’s leading voices in reggae music.
A versatile and enchanting vocalist, Empress Divine has been a consistent presence in the Canadian reggae scene for over a decade. She began her musical journey as a sound system selector and DJ before transitioning into a full-time recording artist, where her vocal talent and songwriting abilities quickly came to the forefront.
Born and raised in Toronto, Empress Divine was immersed in music from an early age. Following the tragic loss of her mother at just eight years old, she turned to music as a source of healing and emotional refuge. As she grew older, her passion developed through church choirs, school performances, and talent shows before expanding into DJing at local events alongside established Toronto selectors.
Influenced by reggae, rub-a-dub, R&B, and dancehall, Empress Divine crafts music that blends soulful expression with uplifting and conscious messaging. Though her early career was rooted in DJ culture, her true calling emerged in singing. In 2009, she released her debut single, “Jah Lives,” a reggae reinterpretation of Jazmine Sullivan’s “Need U Bad.”
Throughout her career, Empress Divine has remained active within the Rastafarian community, using her platform to promote positivity, resilience, and cultural awareness. Her discography includes collaborations with producer Konsequence Musik on tracks such as “Natty Haffi Grow” (Tropical House Riddim), “MAMA” (To Be Great Riddim Pt. 2), and “Sweet Jamaica.” The emotional video for “MAMA” served as a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Annette.
In 2019, she released a visually rich music video for “Natty Haffi Grow,” filmed in Kingston, Jamaica, by Yaard Boyz Entertainment. She is also preparing a video release for “Sweet Jamaica,” which highlights Jamaica’s culture, natural beauty, and people.
Additional projects include the FACTOR-funded single “Real Friends” with Stubborn Gad Productions on the Up Like Seven Riddim, as well as the 2022 collaborative release “Single Girls Blues,” created alongside artist and producer Black Orchid.
With “Medi” now receiving award nominations and increasing recognition, Empress Divine continues to solidify her role as a powerful and authentic voice in Canadian reggae music. Her journey reflects resilience, spiritual grounding, and artistic growth, while her music remains dedicated to uplifting listeners and spreading positive messages.
