When he first met musician/producer Andrew “Bassie” Campbell in 1989, Elihu Morris discovered they had instant synergy. That chemistry can be heard on ‘Broken Silence’, Morris’ first album which was released last September.
The duo co-produced the 13-song set which contains the title track, and the previously released ‘On Your Side of Town’ and ‘How You Cold So’. “It’s a strong album, wi have a lot to say and dat’s what wi did. Wi spent a lotta time on di album, no rush thing,” said Morris.
Production on the album started in 2014, four years after the release of the EP, ‘The Evolution of Elihu Morris’. For ‘Broken Silence’, Campbell meticulously selected the musicians he believed would do the artist justice.
They include veteran keyboardist Franklin “Bubbler” Waul and guitarist Dalton Browne, who have played on hit songs by Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Black Uhuru and Judy Mowatt.
“With di kinda songs wi have, wi had to get di right people to suit their message. I think we achieved dat,” said Campbell, a bass guitarist who was part of Junior Reid’s One Blood band for many years.
Morris was raised in the Craig Town community of Kingston, which is a stone’s throw from the fabled Trench Town, former stomping ground for legends like The Wailers and The Heptones.
