DJ Spiceman Drops Debut EP

A former member of Jamaica’s military, DJ Spiceman has also earned his stripes as an entertainer. In September, the singer released his first EP after almost 30 years in the music business.

‘Never Late’ is the apt title of the self-produced six-song project which has been in the works for some time.

“These songs have been recorded over the past two years. After recording, we took some time to mix and master them, and at the same time I was doing singles for other producers, so we thought this would be the right time for the release,” said DJ Spiceman.

‘Bun dem Out’, ‘No More Troubles’ (featuring Jah Niceness) and ‘User’ are some of the songs on ‘Never Late’, which hears him delivering the “hard-hitting, spiritual social commentary” that has defined his sound over the years.

DJ Spiceman is from St. Ann parish in north-east Jamaica. That is where he started his career, performing on sound systems during the early 1990s, before moving to Kingston to join the Jamaica Defence Force.

He was a regular at Sugar Minott’s Youthman Promotions label in Kingston, where he recorded ‘Miss Elegant’, his first song. There were follow-up songs for Minott and different producers including Carl Melody and Jason Bromfield, but ‘Never Late’ is a project close to his heart.

He hopes the EP will help him, “To gain and touch more fans across the world and to make a difference in someone’s life when it comes to conscious reggae-dancehall music.”
