DJ JFX Tunes up for Soundbwoy

‘Soundbwoy’, a movie looking at the sound system scenes in Kingston, Jamaica and Los Angeles is tentatively scheduled for a 2027 release. It stars dancehall artists Mr. Vegas and E-Dee and is written and directed by American DJ JFX.

The Chicago-born DJ JFX has been a leading player in Los Angeles’ hip hop/dancehall circuit for many years. He also wrote and directed ‘Wheels of Steel’, a 2022 movie with similar themes.

“We are currently at the pitch-stage (of production) but I am hoping to secure funding and start pre-production soon. The film incorporates both Los Angeles and Jamaica’s dancehall and soundclash cultures and will be groundbreaking as the first film dealing with this subject,” he said.

Like ‘Wheels of Steel’, ‘Soundbwoy’ is being done on a “moderate budget.” DJ JFX intends to give fans of dancehall culture a warts-and-all look at what goes into making clashes such entertaining events.

DJ JFX has competed in numerous sound system clashes on the East and West coasts of the United States. He has won many of them in Los Angeles, his hometown.

E-Dee, a Jamaican deejay based in Los Angeles, has also appeared in several movies including ‘Out the Gate’, ‘Gangland’ and ‘Mother-in-Law’.

Mr. Vegas, a dancehall force for almost 30 years, made his movie debut in ‘Squatta’, which is in post-production. It is directed and written by James Williams.

DJ JFX started ‘spinning’ music in Chicago in 1986. He continued playing sound systems when his family moved to California where he also became a Disc Jockey.
