Almost 30 years after giving his life to God, Derrick Scott still basks in the glory of the Word. He continues to give praise on songs like ‘Deliver Me’, which was released on June 19. The South Florida-based singer produced the single for his D Scott Music label.
As a former secular artist, Scott admits there are times when he is tempted to return to those days. But on ‘Deliver Me’, he projects a confidence that keeps him committed to his faith.
“I can’t remember ever wanting to go back to the world, even though you are tempted. Every day, every minute, every second of the day, one is tempted,” said Scott. “But even though you come under pressure, I can’t remember wanting to go back, because the things that are in the world, I have experienced already because that is what Satan, the enemy, wants.”
He was inspired to write ‘Deliver Me’ after reading Psalm 91, which projects resilience and belief in the Lord. Like most of his songs, it is done to a reggae beat.
As a boy in Linstead, a market town in St. Catherine parish, Jamaica, Scott wanted to emulate Freddie McKay, his older brother. McKay, who died in 1986, was known for songs like ‘Picture on The Wall’ and ‘Dance dis Ya Festival’.
At one stage, Scott performed on sound systems in nearby Spanish Town, alongside other budding artists like Lieutenant Stitchie. Since his conversion to Christianity, he has recorded four albums, and songs such as ‘God Answers Prayers’.
