Antiguan singer Causion has re-recorded ‘One Life to Live’, a song inspired by a traumatic incident he witnessed over 30 years ago. The reggae track was first released in 2005.
Released in July, the new version is co-produced by Causion and Maurice Gregory, the former Third World keyboardist with whom he has collaborated on many songs.
‘One Life to Live’ is accompanied by a flashback video directed by Jeron Bailey, Causion’s son. It was filmed in English Harbour, Antigua, where the dreadlocked artist spent much of his formative years.
Causion was moved to write a song after witnessing an horrific road accident while touring the United States in the mid-1990s. As he watched first responders fight to save a man’s life, he turned to a friend and said, “We get up every day and never know what is in store for us. We only have one life to live.”
Those words hit close to home seven years ago when Causion was diagnosed with colon cancer.
“When I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer seven years ago, I had to look at life completely differently. Suddenly a song I wrote as a young man about someone else’s tragedy became my own story,” he said. “Re-releasing it with Maurice felt necessary — the message hasn’t aged, if anything it’s more true for me today than it was when I wrote it.”
The South Florida-based Causion is Antigua’s official Reggae Ambassador. In November 2024, he was awarded the Commander of The Most Precious Order of Princely Heritage, his country’s fourth-highest award.
