For artists like Carl Meeks who grew up listening to classic reggae songs, their beats never left their minds. So, when French music producer Cedrik “Kiko” Ynesta suggested he record an album of songs on timeless ‘riddims’, he readily agreed.
‘Classeeks’ is the title of that album, scheduled for release on December 12. It has 13 songs including ‘What’s Going On’, a collaboration with deejay Screechy Dan.
“These riddims are so special because that’s where (dancehall music) started, so it give me that vibe,” said Meeks.
Those beats include the ‘Throw Mi Corn’ (from the song of the same by Larry Marshall), the ‘Movie Star’ (from Errol Dunkley’s hit song) and ‘Mr. Bassie’ (based on Horace Andy’s hit single).
Several of the songs on ‘Classeeks’ were previously released. They include ‘No Regrets’, ‘Ram Dance Master (featuring Johnny P), and ‘Walking Dead’ (with Derrick Parker).
Meeks, best known for the songs, ‘Weh Dem Fah’ and ‘Youthman’, enjoyed working on the project. Recording on the old school beats reminded him of his early days in the music business, when the Kingston-artist did the sound system rounds.
The veteran singer shared Ynesta’s belief that ‘Classeeks’ concept would have broad appeal.
“He wanted to capture the younger audience and let the older ones indulge in the new songs on these riddims. I select the artists knowing that they are vintage singers just like the riddims and also artists I admired,” said Meeks.
‘Classeeks’ is his second album for 2025. ‘Legendary’, the first, was released in April.
