Brighter Days for Koptiq Sun

It’s been a relatively quiet 2024 for roots singer Koptiq Sun, but he has big plans for his career heading into the new year. Those include releasing songs as a solo act and with Zap Pow, the veteran band he joined six years ago.

This year, Koptiq Sun released ‘Tikin’, a song he co-produced with Cool Runnings, an independent Dutch label. He co-wrote it with Piano Zano, who is also from The Netherlands.

“For the remainder of 2024, Koptiq Sun will be mainly focusing on promoting not just himself but also getting the group Zap Pow to the forefront…Expect music videos, interviews and guest appearances all over the Caribbean, South America, Canada and Europe,” said Koptiq Sun.

Previously known as Geoffrey Star, he is the son of legendary bass player Ranchie McLean, who played on numerous hit singles including ‘Africa’ by The Mighty Diamonds, ‘Woman is Like a Shadow’ (The Meditations) and ‘Rub A Dub Partner’, a song he wrote for Jimmy Cliff.

Koptiq Sun has been recording for over 30 years, releasing a number of singles, many of them for RUNN Records, which also produced and distributed ‘Transformed’, his lone album to date. He was lead vocalist on ‘Zap Pow Again’, the band’s 2018 comeback album.

‘Tikin’ was inspired by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. After hearing the beat created by Piano Zano, Koptiq Sun wrote the lyrics and recorded the song shortly after.

“Being socially aware is extremely important to every artist, especially in this cyber era. In simple words, knowledge is power,” he said.
