Two of Brampton’s most recognizable Black business owners, Wale Rabiu of Grey Matlock Bakery and Lloyd McDowell of Gem Meat – Fish & Groceries and Gem House of Jerk, have publicly declared their support for incumbent Mayor Patrick Brown ahead of the October 26 municipal election.
The two business leaders hosted a community Meet & Greet at Gem Meat – Fish & Groceries on Thursday, October 8, bringing together members of Brampton’s Black community who braved the chilly evening weather to show their support for Brown as he seeks another term as mayor.

The event was hosted by former Brampton City Councillor and current Special Advisor to the Mayor of Brampton, Mr. Garnett Manning, who helped bring community members together for the gathering. The event provided an opportunity for residents to connect with the mayor, hear about his continued commitment to the city and its diverse communities, and express their views ahead of election day.
During the event, Brown thanked members of the Black community for their consistent support over the years and pledged to continue working with them if re-elected.

McDowell, who operates Gem Meat – Fish & Groceries and Gem House of Jerk, said he is not someone who readily endorses politicians. However, he explained that Brown’s work for the City of Brampton and his consistent support for the Black community had convinced him to publicly back the incumbent mayor.
McDowell’s endorsement reflects his confidence in Brown’s leadership and his appreciation for the mayor’s engagement with Brampton’s Black community.
Rabiu, owner of Grey Matlock Bakery, also expressed confidence in Brown, pointing to the mayor’s willingness to listen to residents and his inclusive approach to serving the city.

Rabiu said supporting Brown was an easy decision because he believes the mayor listens to the community and cares about everyone, regardless of their background or the community they come from.
Brown was first elected mayor of Brampton on October 22, 2018, and won re-election on October 24, 2022. As of October 2026, he has served as mayor for nearly eight years.
With election day approaching on October 26, residents will have the opportunity to cast their ballots during the advance voting period, which begins Friday, October 9, and continues on weekends through October 17 at several locations across Brampton.
