Black Creek Reign Brings Bold New Voices and Sounds to Canadian Reggae

The Reggae North Cultural Association is riding a fresh wave of musical energy this year, with a record number of submissions from reggae artists, songwriters, producers, and creators across Canada. Among the entries were several unfamiliar names—unknown even to the judges—but what they lacked in notoriety, they made up for in sheer talent.

To their delight, some of these lesser-known acts delivered top-tier tracks that have now earned them nominations at the Reggae North Music Awards (RNMA).

One such standout is Black Creek Reign, a Toronto-based rock band seasoned with reggae and funk influences. Long a mainstay in Toronto’s live music circuit, the group first turned heads during NXNE 2016. Known for their powerful combination of hard rock riffs, conscious lyrics, funky undertones, and Caribbean rhythm, the band is carving a space of its own where activism meets groove.

This year, Black Creek Reign is nominated in two key RNMA categories: Top Reggae Single with the song “King of Nothing” and Top Reggae Group of the Year. The band expressed their gratitude and excitement, emphasizing the importance of humility and gratitude. Darren Armoogam, a band member stated, “The more we practice the art of thankfulness, the more we have to be thankful for.”

Currently, Black Creek Reign is back in the studio, working on a new EP that captures the evolving synergy of reggae and rock. They’re also expanding their online presence to connect with a wider audience. “We will be entering a studio in downtown Toronto in July to lay down some of the best material we’ve written thus far—stay tuned,” said Armoogam.

But beyond just music, the band remains deeply committed to its message. “Fans can expect to get the raw deal from Black Creek Reign,” said Armoogam. “We never sway from the truth or what we believe in, but we bring that party atmosphere too.”

As the RNMA approaches, it’s clear that Canada’s reggae scene is growing—not just in numbers, but in vision. With bands like Black Creek Reign, the genre is in good hands: unapologetically bold, rhythmically rich, and always ready to speak truth to power.
