Ruffi-Ann is in a reflective mood as she promotes her new single and video titled ‘Nothing Nice Like Freedom’. The veteran deejay formerly known as Lady Shabba said she wrote the song while being detained at the South Camp Road Adult Correctional Centre last year.
“While I was in lock-up, I began displaying flu-like symptoms and I was placed in isolation because they thought I had Covid. Those were 10 of the roughest days of my life, I was already feeling stressed and depressed but going into isolation only made it worse. At first, all I could do was stare at the walls. l almost lost my mind.”
“However, I decided to turn the experience into something positive by doing some deep soul-searching and meditation. That’s when the lyrics of the song came to me. After all, there’s nothing in the world that’s as nice as being free to do whatever ever you want. In jail or prison, they control everything. They tell you when to eat, walk and sleep.”
‘Nothing Nice Like Freedom’ is the title track of Ruffi-Ann’s sophomore album. The 10-track project which was produced by the artiste for her Sugar Pan Production was released on August 13.
“This new album is the beginning of a new chapter in my career. I would like the youths and everyone else to listen to it and receive the positive messages from all the songs on it. I also want them to understand freedom is one of the best things in life,” she said.
Ruffi-Ann’s debut album, which was named after her hit single, ‘Save The Juvenile’, was produced by Dean Fraser and released in 2014.
