The 53rd JUNO Awards nominations have brought a historic twist to the Reggae Recording of the Year category, with female artists dominating for the first time since its inception in 1985. Five-time JUNO award winner Exco Levi received his 11th nomination, joining the ranks of nominees announced at a press conference held at the CBC Building in Toronto on February 6th.
Among the standout nominees is reggae stalwart Ammoye, securing her 7th nomination, alongside newcomers Jah Mila and Omega Mighty. Their inclusion underscores a vibrant shift in the Canadian reggae music space.
The five nominees are Ammoye featuring Turbulence with ‘Stir This Thing’, Exco Levi with ‘Feel Like Home’, Jah Mila with ‘Roots Girl’, ‘Dread’ by Kirk Diamond and Finn and ‘Rush Dem’ by Omega Mighty featuring 4Korners and Haviah Mighty.
The JUNO Awards, celebrating excellence in Canadian popular music since 1970, will culminate in a grand ceremony at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Sunday, March 24, 2024.
