Never one to limit her sound, Shavanique has done melodic songs such as ‘Someone Loves You Honey’ and ‘In Your Arms’, as well as a cover of Bob Marley’s classic ‘Redemption Song’. She ventures into pop with ‘Suga’, her latest single. Released in early November, it is co-produced by EchoSlim, Jeilah and Kashief Lindo for the Musically Unifying label.
Shavanique, who has also recorded as Shava A, said, “Suga has a crossover lovers rock, R&B, soul feel which is something a bit different from my previous singles.” Trodding uncharted territory is not new for the artist, who is from Portmore, Jamaica. The daughter of roots singer Admiral Tibet, she was raised hearing a blend of conscious and hardcore dancehall music.
That diversity prepared her for a recording career that launched in 2013. It has so far yielded a number of songs which also include ‘Island Girl’ and ‘Fire Woman’.
“I’m a singer who doesn’t box myself into a particular genre. I love to create and fuse different types of music which is one of the ways I express my artistic side,” she said.
Shavanique also operates her own record label, G Shav Production, which announced itself early this year with the release of ‘In Your Arms’.
