British rapper P.nology takes on the establishment with his latest song, ‘Im Not A Slave to The System’, which features veteran Jamaican dub poet Yasus Afari.
The roots-reggae track, produced by Jamaican DJ Karim, was released on November 7. Both artists deliver a defiant message against the falsehoods taught to black people over the years.
When he came up with the concept for the song, P.nology approached Yasus Afari, an uncompromising advocate for Afrocentric principles.
“I linked up with Yasus through my uncle Charley, better known as Redlox, in Jamaica. We talk music quite a lot, he knew I wanted someone different on this single, someone who inspires and has a way with words and he introduced me to Yasus,” P.nology explained. “I sent the track to him with chorus and my verse and he loved it just as much as I did and could see the message I wanted the track to have.”
P.nology, who is from Coventry in the British Midlands, renews his link with DJ Karim, who also produced the remix for ‘I Am’, his previous single.
‘I Am’, which he recorded with American rapper Shifty P, was ska-inspired and a salute to that sound which P.nology has listened to since his youth.
The son of Barbadian parents, P.nology grew up appreciating West Indian culture in The Midlands, a region with a massive West Indian community since the 1960s. His ‘Uncle Charley’ is Charley Anderson, a member of British ska band, The Selecter.
