Blending genres to reach a broad audience has been a trend in contemporary music for some time. For his ‘This Is It’ EP, Masta Recka went for that formula which has paid off handsomely for many artists and producers.
Released in May by his Zyfex Artists label, ‘This Is It’ has songs by Anthony B, Twiggi, Sativa D Black1 and Perfect Giddimani.
“I’m always searching for the next big thing. A suh Masta Recka thing set. This Is It, which I also dubbed the riddim, is exciting. Much tamer than my usual fusion of futuristic dancehallAfro hip hop. This project is like the best of the ’90s meeting the best of the new school. A person has to listen to all the songs on the EP to get the full experience of creativity and quality that will keep you rocking,” he said.
Interestingly, it was ‘Patience’ by Zyclef Artists act Cuz Diego that inspired Masta Recka to record a riddim EP. He said he traveled “near and far” for artists he felt would do the project justice. He teams with Anthony B on ‘Justice’, while Twiggi recorded ‘Do That’. Sativa D Black1’s song on This Is It is ‘Jah is Great’ with Perfect Giddimani contributing ‘Trouble Deh Deh’.
Masta Recka is originally from St. Ann parish in Jamaica but spent some of his time living in Kingston before migrating to the United States where he attended college and served in the military. Last year he released his first album, ‘#1’ which includes songs such as ‘Ghetto John Crow’ and ‘Destiny’.
