An unapologetic Mama’s Boy, Singer Dee salutes mothers on ‘Treat Mama Good’, his latest song, which features Richie Spice.
The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada -based artist co-wrote and produced the single for his Ten Toes Production. Released in May, it has gathered steam in recent weeks and is in the Jamaica Music Chart, compiled by broadcaster Richard “Richie B” Burgess.
After Richie Spice agreed to the collaboration, he wrote the initial verse. Singer Dee added lyrics, and they voiced the song one year ago.
“It was inspired primarily by my mother, but also by mothers everywhere who dedicate their lives to nurturing and caring for their families. We wanted to create a song that expresses gratitude and respect for all mothers,” said Singer Dee.
Interestingly, the vocalist recalls the first time he met Bobby Digital, the producer suggested he do a song with Richie Spice. That never materialized until recently when a mutual friend introduced them.
For Singer Dee, working with the roots singer was a joy.
“From the moment we started collaborating, the chemistry was natural. Richie is like a brother, a genuinely good person with a great sense of humour,” he said. “Working with such an experienced artist was an incredible experience, and I learned a lot from him both musically and professionally.”
Singer Dee was born in rural Portland parish, eastern Jamaica. He was raised in the capital Kingston where his interest in music grew through moving around sound systems.
For the past eight years, Singer Dee has lived in Edmonton which has produced notable acts such as country singer K.D. Lang. Based on his observation, the reggae scene there has grown considerably.
“It is vibrant and continues to grow. The city has a strong Jamaican community that keeps reggae culture alive through events, live performances, and community gatherings,” he said. “The vibe is positive and supportive, and there is a genuine appreciation for reggae music.”
