Like any artist with their ears to the ground, Jimmy Magnum has a sense of what’s hot on the scene. ‘After Midnight’, his latest song, was inspired by what he sees and hears in the clubs.
Produced by EMCE, the hardcore dancehall track was released in June.
“‘After Midnight’ is a fun song because in the clubs, after 12 am it’s when the girls go crazy. They’re having a good time, so that’s why I wrote it,” said Jimmy Magnum.
The uptempo single is the Ontario-born deejay’s third released song for the year. It was preceded by ‘Kill Them’ and ‘Money Maker Pt. 2’.
Jimmy Magnum, who has indigenous Canadian heritage, has been a fan of Jamaican culture since he was four years old. His sister was married to a Jamaican sound system selector who kept weekly dances at their home.
Those gigs introduced him to the giants of dancehall including Yellowman, Brigadier Jerry, Lieutenant Stitchie, Shabba Ranks and Super Cat. Jimmy Magnum launched his recording career in 2008 and has released one album to date. ‘I Am’, an eight-song set, which was released in 2023. ‘Nuh Regular’ and ‘Top Man’ are two of his other earlier songs.
Canada’s recent dancehall/reggae history is dominated by artists with Jamaican heritage such as Kardinal Offishall and Boi-Ida. But homegrown acts like Snow and Magic! have also made their mark globally with songs like ‘Informer’ and ‘Rude’, respectively.
