In reggae music, legacy is often passed from one generation to the next. For sisters Lydia and Shema Sutherland, that legacy has become both a calling and a lifelong journey. Performing as L&S SymfHoney, the Jamaican duo is returning to the spotlight with renewed purpose, proving that the strongest harmonies are not only sung—they are lived.
Their musical story began in Kingston, Jamaica, where the sisters first discovered their voices as members of the Queen’s School Choir. Under the guidance of renowned choirmaster Michael Sutherland of the Jamaica Folk Singers, they developed the vocal discipline and harmony that would later become their signature sound.
Their early promise earned them a place as finalists in Jamaica’s prestigious Tastee Talent Contest, a competition celebrated for launching the careers of reggae icons including Beenie Man, Yellowman and Nadine Sutherland. It was an important milestone for the young performers, who were then known as Sistaz on a Muzikal Journey.
Music has always been woven into the fabric of the Sutherland family. As daughters of legendary reggae artists Ijahman Levi and Madge Sutherland, whose classic hit “I Do” topped the British reggae charts, Lydia and Shema inherited more than talent—they inherited a musical mission. That legacy came full circle with their heartfelt reinterpretation of “I Do,” featured on their 17-track debut album, “Out of Many… One Sound.”
Yet their path was never a straight line.
For a season, the sisters stepped away from the music industry as life led them into careers in the corporate world, as well as journeys through authorship and motherhood. Although public performances paused, their creativity never disappeared. Like dormant magma beneath the earth’s surface, the music continued to build, waiting for the right moment to emerge again.
That moment has arrived.
L&S SymfHoney’s forthcoming album is the culmination of more than two decades of songwriting, with every track written, arranged and produced by the sisters on their independent Malyshe Productions label. Drawing from experiences of love, loss, resilience and unwavering faith, the collection reflects the depth of lives fully lived and the authenticity of artists who have found their voice anew.
Their distinctive musical identity blends tender Lovers Rock melodies with empowering Roots Reggae anthems, enriched by intricate vocal harmonies and musicianship. As both pianist and guitarist, the sisters have crafted a sound that remains faithful to reggae’s traditions while speaking to listeners across generations.
The project’s guiding theme, “A Birth and A Re-Birth,” represents more than a new album—it reflects a profound transformation within the Sutherland family. What could have marked the end of their musical journey instead became the beginning of a renewed purpose, inspired by what they describe as a special gift from God. The experience rekindled their passion, strengthened their commitment to preserving reggae’s rich heritage and deepened their understanding of music as a source of healing, empowerment and connection.
More than two sisters singing in harmony, L&S SymfHoney embody endurance, evolution and shared dreams. Their upcoming featured track, “Living Our Dream,” captures that spirit perfectly—a testament to a lifelong promise they made to themselves and to the music that has always united them.
